Wiveliscombe Community First Responders
As the South West of England is predominately rural, it is not always possible for an ambulance to reach people in Wiveliscombe and the surrounding areas quickly. So, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust established Wiveliscombe Community First Responders to respond to life-threatening emergencies and deliver appropriate care until the emergency ambulance arrives. Responders are trained in the basic life support and are equipped with defibrillators, oxygen, first aid equipment and communications.
When possible, they operate a 24 hours a day – 365 days a year rota to ensure that a minimum of one trained First Responder is on duty and available at all times. Emergencies include unconsciousness (due to injury or medical problems), chest pains and breathing difficulties either in the home or public/work places. An emergency ambulance is always dispatched to all incidents attended by Responders.
Is your house easy to find? Every minute could make a difference so … maybe you can consider the following:
- Is your house name or number clearly visible from the road?
- Do you need a sign to point the way to your house from the road?
- Can you leave someone outside to guide the Responder
- At night times, turn on all house lights and open curtains
- Is there adequate light to see the patient?
- Do you have a list of the patient’s medication? A copy of their repeat prescription is the easiest
- Do you know the patient’s GP and surgery details (you can find these on their prescription)
- Please put any pets in a separate room so that Responders do not fall over them
- If the patient is upstairs, please make sure there is nothing on the stairs they could trip over
- If you live alone, then please consider the free Lions Message in a Bottle scheme – to discover more details about this scheme please click on the following link http://www.lions105sw.org.uk/district-projects/message-in-a-bottle/
